Antony Birchall prepares to take on his toughest challenge yet at Ironman UK 2022

On Sunday 3rd July 2022, MGF’s Technical Sales Antony Birchall will take on the challenging Ironman race in Bolton. The event will cover a total distance of 140.6 miles!

The race will begin with a 2.4-mile swim at Pennington Flash Country Park, followed by a 112-mile bike course to Bolton town centre and finishing with a 26.2 mile run around Bolton before reaching the finish line at Victoria Square. With both the run and bike course known for being hilly, this will make the race that more challenging for the athletes.

This is not the first Ironman event Antony has signed up to, in 2021 he originally planned to participate but due to an Achilles injury, was forced to defer 12 months. Adding to the difficulty, his fitness levels decreased as he recovered, especially after the pandemic lockdowns experienced across the UK.

As part of his training, at the end of summer 2021 Antony began three to four 2-kilometre swims and three 10 kilometre runs a week to help build up his fitness ahead of the event. With Ironman fast approaching, he has started to increase this activity especially working on his weakest sport, cycling. Since starting 6 weeks ago with two 30-mile rides, Antony has now built up his endurance to an 80-mile ride taking on two of the notorious Ironman UK loops.

Antony has previously competed in two marathons and the Windermere One Way swim in 2020. He is once again competing on behalf of ‘The Lilac Centre’ Cancer Care, in memory of his wife Annette. Antony is also representing Wigan Harriers TRI and will be sponsored by MGF.

‘This will be my toughest challenge to date, I would just love to get to the finishing line injury free. I’ve just started to work on my nutrition, in Wigan tradition the Pork Pies work a treat.’
