MGF’s Fleet Manager, Mickey Ashcroft, has been organising a monthly collection for a foodbank local to our Head Office for nearly two years now.
When Covid-19 hit the UK, Mickey began volunteering as a NHS Responder, he got an in depth look into the lives of the local community. He found that even people in full time employment, were still struggling to feed their families. In October 2021, Mickey started working with the Atherton & Leigh foodbank, part of the Trussell Trust.
Our Head Office took on the challenge immediately, staff have been bringing in what they can, allowing the Atherton based foodbank to receive donations of food and other essentials from us. Seeing the success of the drive at Head Office, our Engineering Centre and Warrington depot joined in, collecting donations from our staff that are grouped together and taken to the foodbank.
Since the cost of living crisis, putting food on the table and keeping the lights on has become more of a struggle for most, making each donation to the foodbank more meaningful especially during the approaching winter months.

Atherton & Leigh foodbank have never been busier across their three drop off locations, demands have increased by around 170%, they currently have a greater demand than they can provide for. To ensure that the items donated are what is needed, Atherton & Leigh foodbank post updated lists on their website, letting people know what items the foodbank is running low on and what items they have a good stock of, although everything is appreciated.
Items currently in demand:
- Tinned tomatoes
- Instant mash potato
- Ready made custard
- Treats and snacks
- Instant noodles
- Tinned fruit
- Shower gel
- Toothbrushes
- Tinned tuna
- Biscuits
- Instant coffee
- Size 6 nappies
- Washing powder

We are incredibly proud of our staff’s response to the foodbank and are grateful for every item they donate. If anyone wishes to donate to the Atherton & Leigh foodbank, there are drop off points in many local supermarkets.
