MGF Drive Excavation Safety with C&G Services Europe

MGF and our Bristol Depot recently partnered with C & G Services Europe, a leading training services provider, to deliver a Safer Trench Training event.

Engineering, rail, energy and construction workers were invited to attend the free national event at the C & G Services Lodgemoor Training Centre in Stroud, Gloucestershire. The safety training day was held in order to promote Best Practice within excavation and trench shoring safety and aimed to eliminate the risks which construction workers face when entering excavations.

Trench Safety Training with C & G Services

The initiative held particular gravitas within the region due to a corporate manslaughter conviction which was brought against a local geotechnical firm in 2011 after a worker was fatally injured whilst collecting soil samples inside of an excavation. The firm received a substantial fine and with media coverage of the story the topic of excavation safety has remained relevant in the Gloucestershire area and surrounding communities.

C & G Services Europe first approached MGF about partnering for the Safer Trench Training campaign after recognising MGF’s GRiPSHORE™ lightweight shoring range as the ideal system to use in working demonstrations on-site, due to the lightweight properties of the GRiPSHORE™ products and the ease of installing and extracting them from the ground. A number of demonstrations were displayed during the safety day which highlighted examples of both bad and good workmanship and served to help operatives identify when an environment is unsafe to work in.

MGF’s Steve Hesketh speaks with BBC Gloucestershire

BBC Radio Gloucestershire provided coverage of the event and spoke to C & G Services’ Technical Director, Jon Powney, and MGF’s Engineering Director, Steve Hesketh, about the importance of shoring, trench excavation safety and the unique and innovative qualities of MGF’s GRiPSHORE™. The full item and interviews can be heard below:

MGF launched the GRiPSHORE™ range in spring 2015 and believe that the system will revolutionise safety in shallow trenches. The lightweight GRP shoring system can be easily installed by hand by two people and eliminates the requirements for heavy steel shoring components in trenches up to 2m deep. The training initiative with C & G Services was deemed beneficial as it helped to continue MGF’s drive for excavation safety and informed construction workers of the availability of products such as GRiPSHORE™ whilst providing them with invaluable safety training.
