Help from the industry for the industry

Thousands of construction workers are killed, injured or have their health damaged every year in the UK due to unsafe work practices. MGF first joined the Working Well Together (WWT) construction industry health and safety initiative in 2012 and continue to support it today and help stop this suffering.

The Working Well Together (WWT) campaign was set up in 1998 by the Construction Industry Advisory Committee (CONIAC) after recognising the construction industry itself needed to do more to improve its health and safety performance.

Its motto ‘help from the industry for the industry’ is reflected through this joint venture and HSE initiative resulting in there now being 17 regional groups operating across England, Scotland and Wales. MGF are members of the following WWT groups;

  • Merseyside, Manchester & Cheshire (Formerly Haydock) Group
  • North Wales
  • Cumbria
  • Lancashire
  • South West
  • Anglia
  • North East

Most recently, MGF have supported the Midlands WWT groups in providing support to a number Safety Health & Awareness Days (SHADs), which have been found to be the most successful and far-reaching approach.

The aim of these events is to raise awareness of the key health and safety issues facing the construction industry today and to provide practical advice on how to avoid the risks on building sites of all sizes.

The first SHAD event which took place in 2002, was based on general safety and since then more than 50,000 people have attended WWT events, which has resulted in regional groups now developing SHAD’s for more specific topics and audiences. Follow up evaluations are carried out which can be beneficial in highlighting how successfully attendees are implementing changes to their work practices and work place. In a number of cases, these changes have let to a noticeable improvement in the health and safety of some businesses.

MGF ‘s involvement in the Working Well Together Campaign (WWT) continues this year with our attendance at the following upcoming event:
