PROVIDING VITAL SUPPORT TO FOOTBALL STADIUM EXTENSION
The Anfield Road football stadium extension for Liverpool FC was part of an £80million redevelopment project, which added. This project aimed to add an 7,000 extra seats, boosting the ground’s overall capacity to more than 61,000.
Given the size and timescales of the work involved, specialist structural support was required to safely remove the old roof. This involved ensuring the roof was adequately supported as it was deconstructed into 3 separate sections ready to be lifted out under the new overshooting roofline. A solution that was fit for purpose and could be delivered without delaying any other elements of the project was required. MGF’s Structural Support Solutions team were consulted and brought into the project to develop an innovative solution that would enable the project to be completed in a safe and time-efficient manner.

THE SOLUTION
Thanks to our continuous growth and expansion, MGF’s Structural Support division had an extensive range of industry-leading equipment that could be utilised and adapted to provide highly tailored solutions for such a large-scale project.
MGF were tasked with providing propping to the main roof structure. This utilised two 4-leg towers and included back propping through the new stand structure onto the concourse below. This included bringing the towers through the slender stand access areas as well.
Given the highly unique nature of the project, MGF were required to deliver a specific innovative design solution. A slender, high-load-carrying, tower system, with horizontal braced members and adjustable cross-bracing was developed to enable the project team to work safely and efficiently within the constraints of the site. The towers were also tied into the upper tier of the new stand to aid stability.

LIVERPOOL FOOTBALL CLUB ANFIELD ROAD LIFT - THE VERDICT
MGF worked in close collaboration with the contractors’ engineering team to ensure the propping towers would do what was required.
In supplying two UniShore Medium Duty Braced and Cross Braced towers, MGF were able to provide propping from the terrace to the 11-metre-tall roof. Due to site restraints, the towers, which were capable of carrying 67 tonnes each, stood at only 1.6m2 on plan.
Triple 254UC beams were also installed that connected to the top of the towers, further supporting the high load.
MGF worked efficiently from start to finish. The project starting in October 2021 and concluded in March 2023. Our bespoke on-site structural support solution helped Liverpool FC achieve their desired football stadium extension.
