Introduction
MGF supported Toureen Contractors Ltd on the Go Bowring development on Bowring Park Road in Liverpool. The scheme forms part of a new fuelling station and associated retail shop, designed to serve both the local community and passing motorists by providing essential refuelling infrastructure in a convenient and accessible location. Â
A key element of the project was the installation of three underground fuel tanks, each positioned at significant depth and within a constrained site footprint. Delivering this safely and efficiently required a carefully engineered temporary works solution to maintain ground stability and provide a secure working environment throughout the excavation and installation process. Â

KEY BENEFIT
MGF provided the temporary works design and full cofferdam solution, enabling the safe and efficient installation of three underground fuel tanks
THE SOLUTION
MGF’s involvement focused on the design, supply and implementation of a cofferdam system to support the excavation needed for the installation of the fuel tanks. The works required an excavation approximately 31 metres in length, created by the need to install the tanks lengthways rather than in a conventional arrangement due to the site constraints. Each tank was approximately 9.5 metres long and installed at a depth of around 4.9 metres below ground level, placing significant demands on the temporary works design. Â
The cofferdam solution incorporated two frames, with the first utilising a 305/254 frame with two 60-tonne struts and the second using a 305/254 frame with three 259-tonne struts, supported by 5.5 metre KKD trench sheets. This arrangement provided the strength and stability required to retain the surrounding ground while allowing sufficient working space within the excavation for tank installation.Â
As the scheme developed, MGF worked closely with the contactor to review buildability and plant limitations on site. The original design for Frame 2 included a heavier 406 frame, which, while structurally suitable, presented challenges during installation and removal due to lifting capacity of the available plant. In response, MGF value-engineered the design by introducing a third strut, allowing the frame size and weight to be reduced without compromising structural performance. This collaborative approach ensured the cofferdam design remained practical and aligned with site constraints.Â
THE VERDICT
MGF delivered a flexible and well-engineered temporary works solution that enabled Toureen Contractors to safely install the underground fuel tanks within a deep and constrained excavation. By adapting the cofferdam design to suit the contractor’s available plant, MGF improved constructability and avoided the need for larger, specialist lifting equipment, helping to protect both programme and cost. Â
