MGF are joining the conversation for Men's Health Week
Men’s Health Week is an annual campaign, celebrated around the middle of June, to raise awareness and shine a spotlight on the action men can take to prevent health issues and improve their overall wellbeing.
In the UK, one in five men die before the age of 65. This striking statistic highlights the urgent need to have these conversations. Many of these deaths are linked to preventable health conditions that, if identified earlier, could be treated more effectively. Men’s mental health also continues to be a serious concern, with suicide the leading cause of death for men under 50. Despite this, men are only 32% likely to see a doctor or seek support, often delaying action until the issue becomes more serious.
As a firm with a high percentage of our workforce being male, in a typically male-dominated industry, it is important to us to contribute to these conversations and actively encourage more openness around the topic, so we can support more men in taking action to look after their health and wellbeing.
How MGF are Supporting Men's Health
At MGF, we understand that the realities of our industry can place real strain on both physical and mental health, from demanding site conditions to the pressures that can come with the job. Too often, these challenges go unspoken. That is why we are focused on building a culture where people feel comfortable speaking up, where support is visible and practical, and where wellbeing is treated as part of how we work every day, not an add-on.
Through our partnership with The Lighthouse Construction Charity, we are able to provide employees with access to 24/7 confidential support services, which covers everything from mental health to financial wellbeing. Alongside this, we also provide annual health surveillance appointments for all of our yard, workshop and haulage staff with our occupational health provider. These assessments take place across all our depots and are designed to identify potential health issues early.Â
Making a Difference
From our most recent annual health surveillance checks across our yard, workshop and haulage teams, 186 employees attended appointments, with 62 follow-ups advised. In many cases, these checks highlighted potential health concerns that  may otherwise have gone unnoticed.Â
The follow-ups ranged from GP referrals to additional risk assessments or repeat testing within 3-12 months, ensuring individuals receive the right support at the right time.
Across our office teams, 137 employees attended health screening appointments in 2025. During these check ups, where readings showed potential risk, employees were referred to their GP for further investigation. In total, 80 employees were advised to seek further medical advice, with 56 of these identifying a potential issue for the first time. This underlines the importance of regular health checks in helping people take early action and better understand their health. Without these checks, there is a potential that many  symptoms would have gone undetected.
We are committed to continuing to invest in practical support, from access to professional advice through to creating the time and space for people to prioritise their health. Just as importantly, we will keep working to break down the stigma that still exists so that speaking about health, whether physical or mental, feels normal across every part of the business.
By keeping the conversation going and backing it up with action, we can help ensure our people feel supported to take care of their health, not just during Men’s Health Week, but every day.
