Introduction
MGF supported National Highways and Bell Formwork on the A47 Tuddenham to Easton Dualling Scheme near Norwich, where a new pedestrian underpass was required as part of the wider dual carriageway construction. The underpass provides essential access for the public to reach Honingham Church, which would otherwise have been cut off once the new road layout was in place. The project involved constructing a 40m culvert made up of twenty large precast sections, each of which needed to be installed with a high degree of precision.

KEY BENEFIT
MGF Collaborated with the contractor to provide a culvert pulling solution that enabled the installation of twenty large precast sections, creating an underpass for pedestrians.Â
SOLUTION
MGF worked closely with Bell Formwork to understand the installation method and the accuracy required for placing the culvert sections. Due to the size and weight of the units, a tandem system was essential to preventing twisting or misalignment during installation. To achieve this, MGF supplied two 18t Hybrid Culvert Pullers to operate in unison, allowing each culvert section to be pulled into position smoothly and evenly.
MGF provided all necessary calculations, user guidance and on-site support to ensure the team had everything they needed throughout the installation. Deliveries were coordinated to match the contractor’s programme so the culvert sections could be installed efficiently without interruption. Regular site visits ensured that the equipment was performing as required and that the team felt fully supported from start to finish.
This project was also the first time MGF’s 18t Hybrid Culvert Pullers has been supplied and operated as a tandem system, marking an important milestone in the equipment’s deployment on live infrastructure works.
THE VERDICT
MGF enabled a safe, accurate and efficient installation of the 40m pedestrian underpass by supplying a reliable tandem culvert pulling solution tailored to the project’s requirements. The two Hybrid Culvert Pullers kept each unit moving in perfect alignment, preventing twisting and supporting the contractor in maintaining a controlled and safe working environment.Â
The result was a smooth installation process that supported the wider programme for the A47 dualling scheme while delivering essential public access infrastructure for the local community.
