MGF SUPPORT THE SAFE REMOVAL AND RELOCATION OF PROTECTED WILDLIFE
MGF supported HH Smith and ET Hire at Bothy Cottages within the Haigh Hall estate as part of a National Lottery Heritage Fund project, where the contractor needed a structural support solution that would allow for the safe removal and relocation of wildlife. With the structure housing a protected species of bees, the main objective was to create a temporary works arrangement that enabled essential works to proceed with minimal disturbance.
The project required a sensitive and carefully engineered approach, that kept the building stable while preventing vibration, noise and movement that could impact the wildlife.

THE SOLUTION
To meet the client’s strict requirements, MGF worked closely with the contractor to develop a cantilever needling arrangement that provided support to the existing structure in the least intrusive way possible. This method allowed the team to stabilise the building while keeping interventions to a minimum, ensuring the wildlife could be removed safely and relocated with as little disturbance as possible.
The solution utilised a combination of Heavy Duty UniShore®, Heavy Duty Needles and Tension Bracing, providing a versatile and efficient support system tailored to the constraints of the site. Working collaboratively with the contractor supplied kentledge blocks to act as the base of the support system, creating a secure foundation from which the cantilevered arrangement could safely operate.
THE VERDICT
MGF’s collaborative approach and carefully engineered solution enabled the contractor to meet strict wildlife protection requirements while maintaining structural stability throughout the works. The cantilever needling arrangement offered minimal intrusion, ensuring the safe removal and relocation of wildlife without disruption.
This project showcases MGF’s ability to adapt to create practical solutions to sensitive requirements, working collaboratively with the contractor to create a design that was both effective and considerate of environmental priorities.
